Benefits of Dental Implants

Diagram of a tooth replaced with a dental implant done at Precision Dental Specialties in St. George, UT<br title='b11'>Dental implants are a relatively new dental procedure that is often used as an alternative to bridges and other dental restorations. These are more invasive and costly, but they do have several advantages over these other procedures. For instance, they can be used for various purposes, have a great appearance, restore function, and promote great oral health. We perform many dental implant procedures at Precision Dental Specialties.

Versatility

Dental implants are structures that can act as a base for several different dental restorations. They can support certain types of dental bridges so that they do not need to attach to your teeth. Dental implants can also act as support for dental crowns. There are also two different types of dental implants and several techniques that can be used to prepare your jaw for the implants. Endosteal implants are inserted into the jawbone while subperiosteal implants protrude out of the gums.

You also have a choice of permanent or removable dental restorations despite the implants, themselves, being permanent structures. For example, you can get dentures that clip to implants which can be removed at any time. This takes away the need for adhesive but also gives you a break from dental equipment as needed.

Appearance

Due to the dental implant being inserted into your gum and jawbone, they can be easily hidden by dental restorations. Traditional, non-implant supported bridges and crowns will have wire frameworks and dental cement to attach them to your other teeth. On the other hand, dental implants are completely covered, giving these restorations a much more natural look.

Function

Whether you are missing one tooth or multiple teeth, you are likely to experience a loss of function. This includes daily activities such as eating and speaking. Dental implants provide structure for your mouth and allow us to restore it to its original functioning. This means that you will have more self-confidence and be able to forget that you ever had dental implants in the first place.

Durability

Dental implants are screw-like structures that heal for several months prior to placing any dental restoration. Though this may seem like a long time, it allows the implants to become very sturdy as they actually fuse with your bone. These structures are made from titanium, meaning they are not prone to damage or general breakdown, unlike some other types of dental restorations. These can withstand bite force and they can last for ten to fifteen years before replacement is needed.

Oral Health

Dental implants provide structure for your mouth. So, you will not experience the tooth shifting and tissue weakening that occurs if you leave the open gap. Dental implants also do not require grinding or reshaping of healthy surrounding teeth, unlike crowns and bridges.

Regarding oral hygiene, dental implants allow you to easily remove non-permanent dental restorations so that you can clean them on a daily basis. Even with permanent structures, individual implants allow the opportunity to clean thoroughly in between the teeth. So, there is no need to worry about bacteria build-up.
