Pre-Operative Instructions

To ensure your safety during your procedure, please follow the

pre-operative instructions listed below. If you have any questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to reach out.

GENERAL ANESTHESIA INSTRUCTIONS

  • ESCORT: Children under age 18 must have a parent or guardian legally authorized to sign consent and remain at the surgical center during the surgery. All patients will need a ride as they must not drive for 24 hours after general anesthesia.

  • CLOTHING: Wear comfortable clothing with short sleeved blouse or shirt. Wear low heeled shoes. 

  • COLD/FLU SYMPTOMS: If you develop cold or flu symptoms prior to surgery, please contact our office. 

  • MARIJUANA: Use of marijuana slows digestion and increases the risk of aspiration. Refrain  from the marijuana for at least 24 hours before surgery.

  • OTHER: Diabetics, small children, pregnant or nursing mother, and patient with any significant medical conditions should contact us prior to surgery for special instructions.

  • DIET: Please follow the fasting instructions below. Be advised, failure to do so may result in cancellation or rescheduling due to aspiration risk. An important note for all patients who have taken a GLP-1 medication within the past 4 weeks (by injection or pill): please follow the specific fasting guidelines listed below, even if you are no longer taking the GLP-1 medication. 

GENERAL FASTING INSTRUCTIONS

DO NOT EAT OR DRINK ON THE DAY OF SURGERY. 

STOP EATING AND DRINKING AT MIDNIGHT THE NIGHT BEFORE YOUR SURGERY. 

THIS INCLUDES WATER, GUM, MINTS, LOZENGES, ETC.

GLP-1 FASTING INSTRUCTIONS

STOP SOLID FOOD INTAKE AT 7PM TWO DAYS PRIOR TO SURGERY. CLEAR LIQUIDS SHOULD BE CONTINUED UNTIL MIDNIGHT THE NIGHT BEFORE YOUR SURGERY. DO NOT EAT OR DRINK ON THE DAY OF SURGER. THIS INCLUDES WATER, GUM, MINTS, LOZENGES, ETC.

PRESCRIPTIONS

Unless told otherwise, your prescriptions will be called into your preferred pharmacy on the Friday before your scheduled surgery. For your convenience, you will be notified when the prescriptions have been called in so you can plan to pick them up before your surgery date. 

  • ANTIBIOTIC: If you were prescribed an antibiotic, please follow the instructions on the bottle and start taking it the day prior to surgery unless directed otherwise. 

  • MOUTH RINSE: For most extractions and/or implants, Dr. Bulloch will prescribe a Dexamethasone mouth rinse. This is to help reduce inflammation and keep your mouth comfortable after surgery. Rinse with 1 tsp of the solution 3 times per day, as needed. 

  • PAIN MEDICATION: These are to help keep you comfortable after surgery. Non-narcotics will be prescribed prior to surgery and narcotics, if needed, will be sent on the day of surgery. 

ORAL CARE INSTRUCTIONS

  • BRUSHING: You will be given a toothbrush and tongue scraper at your consultation. Please brush thoroughly and use the tongue scraper for 3 days prior to minimize bacteria prior to surgery.

  • MOUTH RINSE: If you have a preferred mouth rinse, we encourage you to use that as well. We suggest something that is non-alcoholic to avoid unnecessary dryness. We DO NOT suggest using hydrogen peroxide orally.

  • UPON ARRIVAL: On your day of surgery, we will give you a toothbrush to brush your teeth and tongue immediately prior to surgery.

  • POST-OPERATIVE CARE INSTRUCTIONS: Will be given to you on the day of surgery. You can also find post-operative care instructions here
